How A Storm Can Affect Your Roof
Living in the Lower Mainland we are often affected by freak and heavy storms. Wind, rain, and snow are all elements that can damage or affect your roof.
After a storm you don't always see obvious damage to your roof and you may assume everything is fine. A few weeks later, a severe leak can spring and there can be extensive damage to the roof. Don't let this be you! Believe it or not, even the tamest storms can cause roof damage. If left unrepaired, this damage can cause an even bigger mess and the entire roof may need to be replaced.
Wind. If you've experienced a storm with high amounts of wind, your roof's shingles have probably lost a lot of the granules they need to stay effective in keeping out water. It's also possible your roof is now missing a few shingles entirely. Missing shingles can leave your roof completely vulnerable to leaking and can also damage the actual wooden roof frame. It's important that these shingles are repaired or replaced immediately.
Trees. If there are even the smallest branches on the ground around your home, it's possible they've caused roof damage. Tree branches can poke holes into the roof or roofing structure, making the area vulnerable to water damage. If only a small area of the roof is affected, this is an easy fix. However, letting damage like this sit without getting it repaired can cause the damage to spread quickly.
Rain. A sturdy, healthy roof isn't affected by rain alone. However, a roof that has any slight damage or vulnerability will only be made worse by the onset of rain. Water damage, leaky spots, and wood rot are the most common effects of severe rain on an already slightly damaged roof.
As a homeowner, you should also consider your homeowner's insurance as a possible financial resource for storm damaged roof repair. Storm damage is usually covered under most homeowner's insurance policies.
There's no doubt about it - storms and bad weather can cause trouble for homeowners. Your roof is vulnerable under many circumstances but a storm can do serious damage and it is good to have the knowledge and some solutions as to how storms affect your roof and what you can do to prepare or repair it.
